We will be reading the major thinkers/writers of the nineteenth-century Romanticism. And the writers include William Cowper, William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The format of lecture will be a combined form of seminar and lecture.

This course will help students understand and appreciate modern drama by exploring major works of the preeminent American Arthur Miller. Students will analyze, interpret, and discuss his work including The Death of a Salesman while reading also the texts' sociocultural contexts.

영어음성학연구(English Morphology)

This course deals with current issues on various English Linguistics topics. This course is designed for graduate students. Topics to be covered are English phonology, English phonetics, and corpus linguistics.

본 강의는 영미단편소설 중 정수에 해당하는 작품들을 선별하여 읽고 토론하며 영어영문학 분야의 전공 소양을 발전시키는 것을 목표로 한다. 그러나 단순히 전공 지식을 습득하는 데만 목적을 두지 않으며 문학을 읽는 즐거움을 알고, 문학을 통해 상상력과 감수성, 그리고 세계를 바라보는 통찰력을 고양하는 데까지도 관심을 둘 것이다.

본 강의는 영미문학사에서 상대적으로 소외되어 온 여성작가들의 단편소설, 시, 희곡, 에세이 등을 선별하여 두루 읽으며 영어영문학 분야의 전공 소양을 기르는 것을 목표로 한다. 그러나 단순히 지식을 습득하는 데만 목적을 두지 않으며, 해당 작품들의 문학사적 의의를 검토하고 재발견함으로써 영미문학사를 바라보는 균형잡힌 시각을 정립하는 데도 역점을 두고자 한다.

현대문법이론의 핵심인 생성통사론의 최신 이론이 최소주의를 이해하고 영문법에 접근할 수 있다. 생성문법의 대표적인 연구성과 관련한 original article을 읽고 비판적으로 이해한다.

사회언어학(Sociolinguistics)

인문·사회 분야의 핵심적인 주제를 다루는 본 교과목은 ‘언어’와 ‘사회’ 사이의 관계를 학습한다. 사람은 왜 사회·문화적 환경(가족, 동료, 직장, 인터넷 등)이 바뀔 때 마다 언어적 표현(발음, 어휘, 문법, 문체, 몸짓 등)을 다르게 되며, 또한 왜 개인적 변화(연령, 성별, 계층, 지역 등)에 따라서도 언어가 다르게 되는지 이해하고자 한다. 이런 문화적·사회적·개인적인 요소에 따른 언어의 유기적인 변화와 발달을 이해하며, 사회에서 차지하는 ‘언어’의 생명력과 다양성을 인식하게 된다. 영어와 영어 문화권을 중심으로, 다양한 문화와 사회에서 사용되는 다양한 언어의 예를 학습하게 된다.

언어습득론(Language Acquisition)

This course discusses how a second or foreign language (e.g. English as L2) is acquired by learners like us who speak different languages (e.g. Korean as L1) and how English education should be carried out for those learners. The central theme of the course is to understand second language acquisition research and language teaching. Lectures include topics in learning and teaching different types of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, individual differences in second/foreign language learners and users in comparison with those in native speakers.

응용언어학세미나(Seminar in Applied Linguistics)

This course is for graduate students to expand their knowledge on the recent second language (L2) vocabulary research. Students will be reading the recent theoretical and empirical studies on L2 vocabulary acquisition and developing their own ideas/beliefs on L2 vocabulary instruction. Students are expected to complete weekly assigned reading assignments before class and participate in in-class discussions. Every student will be asked to give a presentation on their pre-assigned reading and lead the in-class discussion.

미국문학사(History of American Literature)

This course provides an overview of major American literary works from the Puritan era to the present, examining how these works hold significant meaning and value within the historical, ideological, philosophical, religious, and socio-cultural contexts of their time.

미국문학사2(History of American Literature 2)

In this second course of a sequence, we shall survey American literature, beginning with the Puritans and continuing to the 20th century. The emphasis will rest heavily on intellectual backgrounds of American culture, and on placing texts in social, ideological, and historical contexts.
